Checklist for Dismissing Staff

  • Before you dismiss an employee, you must ensure that the procedure has been fair.

  • Unless the conduct in question justifies immediate dismissal, the employee must be warned and asked to correct his/her action, or improve his/her performance. If necessary, assist the employee to do this.

  • Generally an oral warning is required first, followed by a formal written warning, and then a final written warning. You should give the reason for your decision and an explanation of how you arrived at that decision.

  • The reasons should be given before the decision.

  • The employee will have the right to ask for a written statement of your reasons, which you must provide within 7-14 days.

  • Your dismissal should also be given in writing so there is no question or confusion in the minds of either party.
