You should not start a benchmarking analysis until you have fully assessed the operations of your own business and understand the function and process of each section that may require assessment. That is, you need to know what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Management need to get together and brainstorm to dissect the performance as well as the nature of the business, because they need to know in detail how their business operates and what areas need attention. Once benchmarking is complete they need to be able to take the information and use it for comparison as well as developing new strategies that the benchmarking report suggests. It is important to know clearly what steps are required to ensure the success of the business.

The first step is to ask the following questions:

  1. What is your business all about?

  2. What are your most important products?

  3. What makes your business different from other competitors?

  4. Who are your customers and how do they react to your products and services?

  5. What areas are clearly suspect and require a deeper investigation?
