They say that stress is a non-specific response of the body to a particular demand. We need to find out how our bodies respond to these demands. If stress is pro-longed it can cause frustration and become harmful, ending in worse stress.
Recognising the signs of early stress and doing something about it, will make a difference in the quality of life.
The body responds to stress by going through 3 stages:
- Alarm
- Resistance
- Exhaustion
In the case of driving in rush hour traffic, we can experience alarm due to fear of an accident, or anger at a driver who has committed an offence alongside us. The next stage is resistance, when the body will try to repair the damage caused by the stress.
If the stress continues with repeated close calls and traffic jams our body will not have time to make the repairs. Eventually this develops into exhaustion either through headaches or high blood pressure etc.
