How Do you - Make a Genuine Bid at Auction

Auctioneers know a genuine bid when they see one. You have to make a clear bid so that the auctioneer understands that you are not simply scratching your nose. Some auctioneers try to make the whole thing a bit of a fun event and will ask the crowd to participate with bids and provide a bit of entertainment.

Whatever happens, make your bid clear so there is no confusion. Be aware that sales are in lots and once the bid for a particular lot number comes up then you’ll need to pay attention.

Once the bidding is underway watch the reserve price sign that starts to flash when the reserve is reached. Sometime the auctioneer will simply indicate that the item is now for sale.

If you find that auctions are intimidating then it is a good idea to go and be an observer at the beginning and become used to the atmosphere before joining in. It doesn’t take long for you to gain the confidence to be a fully fledged, experienced auction person.
