Before you can make a decision on an adviser, you will need to work out the type of advice you require.

Some of the steps involved are:

  1. Sit down and work out exactly what help you require. Establish the time frames and budget limitations you have. Focus on the outcome you wish to achieve and include all aspects of the outcome, making sure you include more rather than less.

  2. Make your brief as specific as possible so that it is brief yet explains the requirements fully. In this way there will be little room for error or misrepresentation between the parties.

  3. Work out your budget. In your first discussions with the adviser be clear on the costs involved for the services to be provided. Remember even a ball-park figure for an initial estimate is better than having nothing at all. Most consultants provide services on an hourly or daily rate. By ensuring the full details are correctly explained at the outset, costs can be minimised because the adviser will not have to spend unnecessary time on your work.
